Growing a forest, together

Some projects start with a plan. Others start with a shared love for nature.

The partnership with Natuurmonumenten in the Rucphense Bossen was one of those projects. What began as a search for a meaningful environmental initiative grew into a three-year collaboration focused on biodiversity, community involvement and long-term stewardship of the landscape. Together, we explored where support was most needed and how a company, a nature organisation and local communities could genuinely work together. Rather than funding a one-off intervention, we developed a programme that combined ecological impact with hands-on engagement.

Over the years, volunteers, employees and local residents joined a series of conservation activities. We softened the transition between forest and open land, created habitats for small mammals and insects, and helped strengthen biodiversity throughout the area. In the third year, around 1,000 trees were planted by a group of enthusiastic volunteers, adding a new chapter to the forest’s future.

What I enjoyed most was building the collaboration itself: finding the right partner, connecting people around a common purpose and creating opportunities for people to contribute in a tangible way. With every event, the project gained momentum. Relationships grew, the landscape changed and the results became increasingly visible.

Today, the impact can be seen not only in the forest, but also in the community that helped shape it. It remains one of the projects I am proud of because it shows what can happen when people come together around something simple yet powerful: caring for the environment we share.
