Learning from the next generation

The Kids Community Advisory Panel was created to build a connection between Shell Pernis and the communities living around the site. Together with De Kleine Ambassade, I developed a programme that enabled local children to learn about the refinery while giving them a genuine voice in conversations that mattered to the organisation.

Through lessons, workshops and excursions, children explored topics such as technology, safety, the environment and working in technical professions. At the same time, they were invited to share their perspectives and develop recommendations on issues ranging from diversity and inclusion to communication and workplace culture.

What I particularly liked about this project was that it created learning on both sides. The children gained insight into a world that is often unfamiliar, while the organisation gained a better understanding of the people living nearby. Conversations with children, parents and teachers offered a much richer picture of the surrounding communities than reports or statistics ever could.

The impact extended beyond the participants themselves. Children shared their experiences at school, at home and with friends, creating a ripple effect throughout the community. Their ideas sparked new conversations within the organisation as well, proving that valuable insights can come from unexpected places.

From identifying the right partner and building internal support to designing and delivering the programme, I led the project from concept to implementation. It remains one of my favourite examples of how participation can create meaningful connections and mutual understanding.
