Making technology tangible through creativity

Technical careers often struggle with an image problem. Many young people have little idea what engineers, operators or technicians actually do, making it difficult to spark interest in technical education and future careers.

Across a range of educational and community programmes, I explored how creativity, play and storytelling could make technology more accessible and engaging for young audiences. Rather than relying on information campaigns, the focus was on creating experiences that invited curiosity and participation.

One example was the Chocolate Challenge, an interactive simulation game in which students use chocolate candies to experience the dynamics of a production process. Through teamwork, problem-solving and a healthy sense of competition, technology became something to experience rather than simply learn about. The challenge consistently generated enthusiasm and helped students discover talents and interests they did not know they had.

Another project connected local communities with the Shell Eco-marathon, an international competition where student teams design and build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The event offered a powerful glimpse into the future of innovation and showed young people what is possible when creativity and technology come together. It created excitement around engineering while connecting communities to broader conversations about energy and mobility.

My most hands-on contribution was the development of the Shellies: a travelling educational concept that combined theatre, experiments and a mobile laboratory. Created together with teachers and performers, the programme visited local festivals, schools and community events. Through playful characters and interactive activities, children and their parents were invited to explore where energy comes from and how industrial processes work.

What connected these projects was the belief that people learn best when they are actively involved. Whether through a game, a competition or a theatrical experience, creativity became a tool for building curiosity, connection and a sense of possibility around technology.
