Today the Kids Community Advisory Panel came to the site for an excursion. When I started this project in 2014, I was slightly concerned if the refinery would be interesting enough for 8-11 year olds. But my contacts from De Kleine Ambassade, the specialised partner I worked with on the project, assured me that the children would be interested.

And indeed, the first Advisory Panel was highly engaged with topics such as safety and refinery. One of the kids even said it was better than De Efteling, an amusement park in the Netherlands. The second group also loved seeing the safety centre and the fire brigade and learning about the refinery process. I look forward to hearing their questions about working in technology in the upcoming lessons – I expect some surprising questions.

The Kids Community Advisory Panel consists of children from local communities who receive interactive lessons, go on excursions and are asked to advise the site on specific issues. In 2014, the panel suggested handing out safety glasses to protect your eyes from fireworks during the New Year celebrations and from accidents while working in the house.
